FAMIS (Family Access to Medical Insurance Security) is Virginia’s health insurance program for children and pregnant women. It is Virginia’s CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) coverage. Sentara Health Plans partners with the Virginia Department of Medicaid Assistance Services (DMAS) to carry out the program.
There is no cost to enroll and nothing to pay each month. There are no copays.
There are several FAMIS types.
- FAMIS Children is health insurance for children up to age 18. See what services FAMIS Children covers.
- FAMIS MOMS is health insurance during pregnancy and after giving birth. Learn about what FAMIS MOMS covers for you.
- FAMIS Prenatal Coverage offers the same benefits as FAMIS MOMS no matter your immigration status. See how to qualify for FAMIS Prenatal Coverage.
- FAMIS Select helps families pay for their health plan from their employer. Your child must be enrolled in FAMIS first. Learn about the benefits of FAMIS Select.
Income Eligibility for FAMIS Programs
The income limits for FAMIS are higher than the Medicaid income limits. You may use the online Screening Tool on the Cover Virginia website to see if you or your child may qualify.
