Moving your body can help you stay strong and steady. It keeps your body flexible, so everyday tasks are easier.

What counts as physical activity?

Any movement is physical activity. This can include:

  • Stretching or changing positions
  • Walking, standing up, or sitting down
  • Light housework or moving during TV time
  • Physical therapy exercises
  • Moving with a cane, walker, wheelchair, or help from a caregiver

Keeping your muscles strong is important for your overall health and wellness.

Small movements can make a big difference.

Everyone moves in different ways. Some people move on their own while others need help, and that’s okay. Any type of activity, if you need help or not, can improve your health. It’s okay if you:

  • Move slowly or need breaks
  • Need help to move
  • Feel some days are harder than others

Your comfort matters.

Movement may feel hard

It can be difficult for many people. If you find it hard or painful to do physical activity, share it with your doctor. They can help support you and provide different activities.

Talking with your doctor

If movement feels hard, talking with your doctor can help. At visits, your doctor may ask about physical activity or exercise. There are no right or wrong answers.

This helps them:

  • Understand your strength and balance
  • Learn what may be hard for you
  • Help you stay balanced

Your doctor can use this information to help you move.

Staying safe while moving

As you think about moving more, it’s also important to stay safe.

Some simple tips:

  • Start with small movements
  • Go at a pace that feels right
  • Stop if you feel pain or strong discomfort
  • Use support like a chair, walker, or handrail if needed

Your doctor can help you find what works for you.
